Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
