Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 titles have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his first championship for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

Medvedev, a former number one, has had a difficult season, achieving just one match at the big events and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.

His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - caused him falling of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently progressed in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested three-set triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

This represents his maiden championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface from March of that year.

The win also signifies he has secured twenty-one titles at twenty-one distinct events.

"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my both daughters together, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my child her name, because the initial championship I achieved when my child my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his last six championship matches, featuring in Halle earlier this year.

Medvedev's retrieving strategy and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had led some to question if his capacity to play at the top level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, making an effort to advance forward and perform assertively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

The champion recovered from a break down in the first set against the challenging Frenchman, securing 4 of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.

The competitors exchanged break points in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his initial ATP Tour championship, gained dominance to create a third set.

Moutet saved four initial break points in a competitive final set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he clinched the title with a rally at the net area, with Moutet failing to manage a return after over two and a half hours.
