British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
